Features

What the IP Lookup tool provides.

IPv4 Lookup

Look up any public IPv4 address and retrieve geolocation, ISP, and network information. Supports all standard IPv4 formats.

IPv6 Lookup

Full support for IPv6 addresses including shorthand formats like ::1. Get complete geolocation and ISP data for IPv6 addresses.

Domain Lookup

Enter any domain name such as example.com to look up the IP address the domain resolves to and its associated information.

Geolocation

Identify the approximate geographic location of an IP address including country, region, city, postal code, and coordinates. Useful for content localization and geo-targeting verification.

ISP & ASN Detection

Identify the Internet Service Provider and Autonomous System Number associated with an IP address. Helps determine network ownership and hosting provider.

Proxy & Hosting Detection

Detects whether an IP address belongs to a proxy service, VPN, or hosting provider. Useful for security investigations and traffic analysis.

What Is an IP Lookup?

An IP lookup is a method of querying a database to retrieve information about a specific IP address or domain name. When you enter an IP address into the tool, it queries a geolocation database to find the registered location, internet service provider, and other network details associated with that address.

Every device connected to the internet is assigned an IP (Internet Protocol) address, which serves as a unique identifier. While an IP address alone does not reveal personal identity, it can provide general geographic information about where the device or network is registered.

This tool uses the ip-api.com service to perform lookups. It supports both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, as well as domain names. The results are returned in a clean, structured format grouped by category.

What Information Can Be Retrieved?

The IP Lookup tool returns structured data grouped into logical sections.

IP Address / Query

The IP address or domain that was queried, along with the lookup status indicating whether the request was successful.

Geolocation Data

Country and country code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-2), region/state code and name, city, ZIP or postal code, approximate latitude and longitude coordinates, and the IANA timezone identifier.

Network Information

Internet Service Provider (ISP) name, organization name, and Autonomous System Number (ASN) which identifies the network operator.

Connection Details

Reverse DNS (PTR record) if available, and flags indicating whether the IP belongs to a hosting provider, mobile carrier, or proxy/VPN service.

Common Uses for IP Lookup

IP lookups are used across many technical and operational contexts.

  • Troubleshooting — Identify the source of suspicious traffic, verify network connectivity, and diagnose routing issues by checking IP geolocation and ISP information.
  • Website analytics — Understand the geographic distribution of your website visitors. IP geolocation helps segment analytics data by country and region.
  • Security investigations — Check whether an IP address is associated with a proxy, VPN, or hosting provider — common indicators of bot traffic or abuse.
  • CDN verification — Confirm that your content delivery network is serving traffic from the expected edge locations by looking up the IP addresses of your CDN endpoints.
  • Network diagnostics — Troubleshoot network issues by checking the ASN and organization behind an IP address to determine network ownership and peering arrangements.
  • Server identification — Look up the hosting provider and datacenter location for any server IP address. Useful for infrastructure planning and vendor verification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an IP Lookup?

An IP lookup is a query to a geolocation database that returns information about an IP address or domain name, including the approximate geographic location, ISP, ASN, and other network details associated with that address.

Can I look up a domain name?

Yes. You can enter any domain name (such as <code>example.com</code>) and the tool will look up the IP address the domain resolves to and return the associated geolocation and network information.

Does this show my exact location?

No. IP geolocation provides an approximate location based on the registered address of the ISP or network provider. It typically shows the general area (city or region) where the ISP is registered, not the exact physical location of the device.

How accurate is IP geolocation?

IP geolocation accuracy varies by region and ISP. In many cases, it can identify the correct city with reasonable accuracy. However, mobile IPs, VPNs, and proxy connections may show locations far from the actual device location.

Does this support IPv6?

Yes. The tool supports full IPv6 address lookup, including shorthand formats such as <code>::1</code> and IPv4-mapped IPv6 addresses. Both IPv4 and IPv6 queries return the same structured information.

Is this tool free?

Yes. The IP Lookup tool is completely free to use. There is no registration, no login, and no usage limits enforced by this tool. The upstream geolocation service has rate limits that may apply to very high-frequency usage.

Can I look up private IP addresses?

Private IP addresses such as <code>10.x.x.x</code>, <code>192.168.x.x</code>, and <code>172.16-31.x.x</code> are not supported because they are reserved for internal networks and cannot be geolocated. Only public IP addresses can be looked up.

What is an ASN?

An Autonomous System Number (ASN) is a unique identifier assigned to a network operator or organization that controls a block of IP addresses. ASNs are used in BGP routing to exchange routing information between networks. The ASN information includes both the number and the organization name.

What is an ISP?

An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is an organization that provides internet access to customers. The ISP field shows the name of the provider that owns or operates the IP address range. This can help identify whether an IP belongs to a residential ISP, business provider, or hosting company.

What is a proxy?

A proxy is an intermediary server that forwards requests on behalf of a client. The tool detects whether an IP address is associated with a proxy, VPN, or Tor exit node. Proxy detection is useful for identifying traffic that may be masking its true origin.

What is reverse DNS?

Reverse DNS (PTR record) maps an IP address back to a domain name. While forward DNS maps a domain to an IP, reverse DNS does the opposite. Not all IP addresses have reverse DNS entries configured. The tool displays the PTR record if one exists.

Does this tool store my searches?

No. IP lookups are sent to the backend API which queries the geolocation service. No search data is stored, logged, or persisted. Your queries remain private and are not saved.

What does the Hosting flag mean?

The Hosting flag indicates whether the IP address belongs to a hosting provider or data center. IPs from cloud providers (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure), web hosts, and dedicated server providers are flagged as hosting.

What does the Mobile flag mean?

The Mobile flag indicates whether the IP address is assigned to a mobile carrier network. Mobile IPs often change frequently as devices move between cell towers, making geolocation less precise.

What fields does the API return?

The tool returns the following fields when available: query, status, country, countryCode, region, regionName, city, zip, lat, lon, timezone, isp, org, as, reverse, hosting, mobile, and proxy.

How fast is the lookup?

Most lookups complete within a few hundred milliseconds. The tool has an 8-second timeout for upstream requests. If the geolocation service does not respond within this window, the lookup is cancelled and a timeout error is displayed.
